Now that Eugenio Suarez has signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros star Isaac Paredes remains one of the leading options for other teams needing reinforcement at the hot corner.
Although the 2025 season was one to forget for the Astros, as they failed to make it to the postseason for the first time since 2016, Paredes impressed on an individual level. The Mexican infielder batted .254 with 20 home runs and 53 RBIs, earning his second All-Star selection. As a result, he is reportedly on several teams’ shortlists this winter.
During Monday’s episode of “Crush City Territory,” The Athletic’s Chandler Rome offered some insight on how Suarez’s decision to join the Reds may affect other teams’ interest in potentially trading for Isaac Paredes.
“The Red Sox did not make Eugenio Suarez an offer. With that in mind, I’m not sure how much this (Eugenio Suarez signing with the Reds) impacts the Red Sox directly with Isaac Paredes. I can’t imagine that him coming off the market is going to force them to do more. The Pirates were a team that showed a lot of interest in Eugenio Suarez; they need a third baseman,” Rome said (24:38).
“Joey Bart’s name came up a couple of times, former No. 1 pick, now a backup catcher in Pittsburgh. That obviously would fulfil an Astros need. This is just me giving you some things that could help connect some dots. Everyone has asked me who are the other teams in on Isaac Paredes. The straightforward answer is, I don’t know, but I do know there are other teams that are talking,” he added.
Acquiring Red Sox Outfielder In Return Could Convince The Astros To Trade Isaac Paredes, Per Insider
For most of the offseason, re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman was considered the Boston Red Sox’s priority, after he established himself as a fan favorite at Fenway Park with his fine performances in 2025.
Much to the frustration of fans, however, the organization came up short in pursuit of the three-time All-Star. While Boston took their sweet time in getting a deal over the line for Bregman, the Chicago Cubs swooped in, signing the infielder to a five-year, $175 million contract. Now scrambling for a replacement, Paredes seems to fit their needs perfectly.
Although the Astros don’t seem to be in any rush to move Paredes on, Chandler Rome believes getting outfielder Wilyer Abreu in return could pique their interest.
During Monday’s episode of “Crush City Territory,” Rome explained the factors that make Abreu an interesting option for the franchise.
“The Astros prefer Wilyer Abreu over Jarren Duran, if they are going to do a deal with the Red Sox… They are more intrigued by Wilyer Abreu for a number of reasons,” Rome said (11:50).
“He’s making the league minimum, he’s got more team control, and he’s a two-time Gold Glover in right field. Won it last year too. The defense is better than Duran’s, the offense is still very very good, don’t get me wrong. He’s cheaper, has more years of control, and is a better defender,” he added.
Isaac Paredes is under team control through the 2027 season.
