Fans on social media trolled Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe after his mistimed ABS challenge left the ballclub without any in the last inning of the game. While the home team won the series opener 5-3, the match-ending strike call by the home plate umpire on Amed Rosario was highly controversial, as the ball seemed to clearly miss the strike zone.
However, with no challenges left, the Yankees couldn’t review the call. Fans were quick to share their reactions to the umpire’s strike call and the Bronx Bombers’ lack of challenges, which left them helpless in the situation. With the defeat, the Yanks have now lost three games in a row.
Gerrit Cole made a terrible start against the Tigers on Monday night, while his teammate Framber Valdez dominated the Yanks, giving up just one run on four hits and striking out eight batters in six innings. With the bat, Kevin McGonigle and Riley Greene led the charge, while Spencer Torkelson and Colt Keith also drove in a run each.
Senior MLB Insider Suggests Lucrative Trade Option as Replacement For Anthony Volpe
In his latest column, Fansided.com’s Robert Murray wrote that a highly energetic and skilled shortstop in the NL East could be a good fit for the Yankees’ infield. According to Murray, Washington Nationals’ C.J. Abrams could be a strong replacement for the struggling Volpe at SS by the midseason trade deadline.
“This is a very winnable American League, and the Yankees should absolutely be thinking big. What that could look like remains to be seen as the trade market is still very much unsettled. But Brian Cashman should make a call to the Nationals to see what it would take to pry C.J. Abrams out of Washington,” Murray wrote.
Abrams is having an exceptional year at the plate with the Nationals, posting a .286/.367/534 line, along with 17 home runs, 57 RBIs, and a .901 OPS. In contrast, Volpe’s first three Major League seasons with the Bombers saw him never surpass an OPS of .666.
These statistics are concerning for a shortstop on a team aiming for a World Series. With the midseason trade window fast approaching, the Yankees could be looking to add depth and a potential long-term fit at the shortstop position.
