Aaron Judge was adopted by Patty and Wayne Judge shortly after his birth in Sacramento, California, in April 1992. Both were school teachers in Linden, California. The Yankees captain started his baseball career at the Linden High School nearby, where he also pursued basketball and football.
Judge has remained highly appreciative and grateful to his adoptive parents. In an interview with Esquire on Wednesday, the New York Yankees star spoke at length about the importance of Wayne in his life.
When asked about the biggest lesson his father has taught him, Judge said it was the importance of always being present. Now a father himself, he understands how much it means for a child to know their father is there for them.
“His presence. He was always there for me, no matter what,” Judge told Esquire. “After a tough game in high school, my dad wouldn’t say a word the whole ride. But just having him there meant something. Or even after good games, just him being there. That’s one thing I try to now do with my daughter. She’s probably not going to know if I’m happy or sad, but she knows that I’m in the room and I’m present with her.”
Judge believes in creating special moments with one’s children, something to talk over dinner.
Aaron Judge Names One Thing He Would Share With His Younger Self
In the same interview with Esquire, Aaron Judge was asked to share one piece of advice he would give his younger self to help him in the future. The Yankees star advised his younger self to “stay humble,” “work hard,” and “stay focused.”
“Especially when you’re young, you think you know it all, you think you got it all figured out. Rely on the people around you,” Judge added. “Ask them questions. When I was a rookie, I was asking Mark Teixeira, Brett Gardner, these guys, questions. It’s like, “Okay, I got all these people in my corner. I’m going to take a little bit here, a little bit here,” and that’s how you form how you’re going to be.”
Judge also acknowledged that maintaining a positive attitude during difficult times is important and that comparisons should be avoided.
“I try to take a nice deep breath, take myself back to when I’m playing high school baseball in Linden, where there’s nobody watching, and just go out there and have fun,” the Yankees star said.
Currently, Judge is on the Injury List for the Yankees, recovering from a dive that led to the injury back in April. As of now, there is no clear timeline on when he will be back in action.
