New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge refrained from evaluating the franchise ahead of the trade deadline. Fans were surprised to learn that Judge turned down the request, saying it was “way above my pay grade” to do so.
Judge, who has been out since June due to a rib injury, was asked about the team’s needs ahead of the trade deadline. Despite earning close to $40 million annually, Judge declined to opine on the team.
“That’s way above my pay grade,” Judge said. “We got a good team where we’re at. That’s what you can do as a player. You’ve got to put yourself and your team in the best position to give the front office the ability to go out there and get the final pieces. Looking forward to seeing what happens.”
Fans were a little taken aback by the captain’s answer. It appears Judge has no interest in whatever the front office is doing and is rather at peace with the players the franchise has.
“Judge makes 40 million a year opposed to Cashman’s 5 million. Pay grade is a poor analogy. Maybe he meant rank instead of pay grade,” one fan pointed out.
Overall, fans were expecting a more responsible answer, at the very least, from Judge, who probably earns more than general manager Brian Cashman.
Aaron Judge Reacts To News Of Another Major Yankees Injury
Cody Bellinger became the latest Yankee to go down with an injury as the outfielder suffered a left hamstring strain during the 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
His left hamstring was injured after he doubled in the eighth inning. He was picking up his leg after rounding up the bases and was subsequently taken out of the game.
On Sunday, the Yankees placed him on the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, the franchise recalled top outfield prospect Spencer Jones from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Reacting to this latest injury concern, Judge showed faith in the guys from the Yankees farm system.
“We got a lot of depth,” Judge said. “We got a lot of guys in the Minor Leagues ready to go… We got a lot of guys who can fill those holes. You can’t replace a Bellinger, but we’re gonna keep doing what we do.”
Bellinger’s production may not be replaced entirely, but the Yankees can cover with Jones and Jasson Dominguez. The former MVP batted .259 with 97 hits, 11 home runs, 53 RBIs, 52 runs and 10 stolen bases in 102 games this season.
