MLB insider Joel Sherman proposed a lucrative trade for the New York Yankees that could see them offload Jazz Chisholm Jr. and acquire San Francisco Giants second baseman Luis Arraez.
Identifying the key problems the Yankees have struggled with, namely a low batting average and a fragile infield defense, Sherman said Arraez could plug the gaps at either end.
On the New York Post’s Pinstripes Post podcast, Sherman said it would not be wise to move Chisholm to third base, and also addressed the fact that Arraez had previously refused to play first base.
“So Arraez makes sense if you could trade Jazz Chisholm. I’ve seen some stuff about moving Chisholm back to third base. I think that would be an unbelievable mistake… Luis Arraez’s defensive numbers this year are very good at second base… I’ve heard he does not want to play first base,” Sherman said,
“if I’m going to get Arraez, I’ve got to know I could trade Chisholm. And I would do that because I think one of the things the Yankees are lacking, even in this day and age when there’s not a lot of respect for it, is I think they’re lacking some batting average. I think they’re lacking some get the ball out there and force the other team to play, and I think Arraez would really help with that,” he added.
Arraez signed a 1-year deal with the Giants in February 2026, worth $12 milliion.
Luis Arraez Continues to Produce This Season
Arraez is a three-time batting champion, winning the honor in three consecutive seasons from 2022 to 2024. Time and again, Arraez has shown that his game is built around tactical hitting and not brute force.
Despite just hitting four home runs and driving in 38 runs, Arraez has a .326 batting average and an .812 OPS. The second baseman has 127 hits in 390 at-bats in 98 games. He is projected to register 198 hits in 608 at-bats by the end of the regular season.
If the Bombers were to make a serious move for the Venezuelan ahead of the trade deadline, it would likely be met with wide appreciation from the entire fanbase.
