The Kansas State Wildcats watched as star QB Avery Johnson exited the game following a completion in the third quarter against Colorado. Locked in a battle, with a seven-point lead, it was the nature of the injury to Johnson that saw many pause for concern.
What Happened to Avery Johnson?
Dropping back to throw, Johnson scanned and found an open receiver over the middle of the field. In the face of pressure and despite a jumping Colorado defender, Johnson uncorked an accurate pass but immediately went down in pain.
After further inspection, Johnson was not touched by any defender on the play, but immediately grabbed at his left side after throwing the ball over the middle of the field.
He lay on the ground in obvious pain, grimacing and noticeably grabbing at his left side, just above his left hip.
Johnson exited the field under his own power, albeit with some help from the trainers, and was seen lightly jogging into the locker room moments after.
He exited the game against Colorado having built a 14-7 lead and having thrown for 86 yards and rushing for a touchdown.

Former Penn State and UConn quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson replaced Johnson on the drive.
Update: Johnson was shown lightly jogging back to the Kansas State sidelines when the drive was nearing its completion, but he remained on the sidelines as Roberson finished the drive.
He returned to the field in the third quarter, only to later go back to the locker room, and once again jog back out. Johnson returned to the lineup for good in the fourth quarter, but it doesn’t seem like he’s 100% healthy.
As such, CFN will continue to monitor this situation.
