Vic Schaefer’s Texas Longhorns are continuing their path in the NCAA Tournament, having beaten the Michigan Wolverines in the Elite Eight round this Monday with a confident 77-41 final score at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, their home state. Now, they will play the UCLA Bruins at PHX Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday.
According to Schaefer, the Longhorns will be preparing for the Final Four with an unusual ritual that involves killing a turkey. Here’s what Schaefer told the press shortly after the win:
“It might not even take me 30 minutes if I can get that dude off the roost.”
Forward Madison Booker led Texas in scoring with 19 points. She was followed closely by Justice Carlton, who had 25 points on the night. Kyla Oldacre scored 12 points and was the team’s third-best scorer.
The Longhorns have so far defeated Missouri State, Oregon, and Kentucky in the first and second rounds, and the Sweet 16 stage, respectively.
Vic Schaefer Isn’t Ready For Her Senior Players to Leave Austin Yet
Speaking ahead of the game against Michigan on Monday night, Vic Schaefer said he isn’t ready to let go of some of his senior players, like Sarah Graves and Rori Harmon, yet.
His message to seniors ahead of the clash with the Wolverines? Enjoy the occasion:
“Yeah, again, I’m not ready for it to be over either. I hugged Harmon this morning at breakfast and said those same words,” Schaefer told reporters. I think, again, our team embraces and loves each other equally. I think everybody knows, you know, we’ve got four seniors, potentially five if I don’t get that year back for Sarah, but I think for all of them the coaches consistently told them, you don’t take these things for granted. I don’t take these times for granted. These times are fleeting.”
“So when you’re in that moment, I want them to really step back and, as the old folks would say, smell the roses, all right? Really embrace, hey, we’ve gotten to this point. We need to really understand what it’s taken to get here, because you know, we’re going to try to do it next year and the year after and the year after,” he added.
The advice seems to have worked, and Graves and Harmon will have the opportunity to represent the Longhorns at least for one more game.
