In their quest to get back to the WNBA Finals, the New York Liberty scored perhaps the biggest acquisition of the offseason thus far when they signed former Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally. In the words of ESPN’s Shams Charania, this is a “major WNBA free agency domino” that significantly raises the Liberty’s playoff ceiling.
After Charania, Alexa Philippou, and Kendra Andrews broke the news on Saturday, Madeline Kenny of New York Post tried to put this acquisition in perspective by comparing Sabally’s latest move to a blockbuster NBA headline from 10 years ago.
“Satou Sabally joining Ionescu, Stewart and JJ in New York is the WNBA’s version of when KD joined Curry, Klay and Draymond at Golden State. Liberty suffered a shocking loss a year after winning title and they found the perfect player to help address their flaw. NY is a loaded,” Kenney tweeted.
Right after the Golden State Warriors lost Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals to the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers, Draymond Green reached out to Kevin Durant in an effort to recruit the former NBA MVP to Golden State. Less than a month later, Durant was introduced as the latest addition to the Warriors, who went on to win back-to-back NBA titles over the next two seasons.
In Sabally’s case, she is joining a Liberty squad that is set to bring back their biggest names over the past few years. Sabrina Ionescu has core designation, while Breanna Stewart and former Finals MVP Jonquel Jones are reportedly set to re-sign with the team.
The addition of Sabally, who averaged 16.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last year, makes the Liberty a formidable threat to challenge A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces for the WNBA title this season.
Mercury Writer Brings Up Nate Tibbetts Quote After Satou Sabally Signs With Liberty
From the looks of it, Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts had an inkling that Satou Sabally would be exploring her options after just one season in Phoenix.
After the news of Sabally joining the Liberty broke on Saturday, Mercury beat writer Aya Abdeen pulled up a Tibbetts quote that she had tweeted a week ago. In this quote, Tibbetts was talking about the possibility of bringing back the Mercury’s core of Sabally, Alyssa Thomas, and Kahleah Copper.
“That’s a question for the front office. I mean, everybody hopes to have consistency throughout their teams, but we’ll see what happens.”
As it turned out, Sabally did make the decision to leave The Valley. Now, fans can look forward to her return game in Phoenix alongside her new Liberty squad.
