WNBA Free Agency Prediction: A Sabally Sisters Reunion in Toronto?

Satou Sabally is one of the most anticipated European players available in the WNBA free-agent market. She was on a one-year, $215,000 contract with the Phoenix Mercury last season, and now, she is considering new destinations. While there is no confirmation of her negotiations with other teams, the 3-time WNBA All-Star might have a favorite team for next season.

The panel on The Women’s Hoops Show on YouTube discussed the possibility of Satou joining an expansion team this season. Interestingly, New York Liberty reporter Jackie Powell revealed an intriguing factor that might lure Satou to Toronto: her younger sister, Nyara Sabally. Powell said:

“I would not be surprised if Satou Sabally is taking a meeting with the Toronto Tempo, in addition to the fact that now her sister Nyara is on the Toronto Tempo.”

Co-host Jordan Robinson was excited by the idea of the two sisters playing together in Toronto. Powell also mentioned that general manager Monica Wright Rogers and the coaching team, Sandy Brondello and Olaf Lange, were highly respected individuals in the league, and their impact on a new team should not be overlooked.

Nyara was drafted fifth overall by the New York Liberty in 2022, two years after her elder sister Satou came to the league. She was a crucial piece of the Liberty’s 2024 WNBA championship and played some big minutes off the bench in Game 5 of the Finals, where she scored 13 points and seven rebounds.

“Thank you Phoenix,” Satou Sabally bids adieu to WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury

Satou Sabally shared her thoughts on social media with a goodbye post, signalling that her time with the Phoenix Mercury has come to an end. The update has confirmed earlier speculations that the forward would not re-sign with the team. On Instagram, Satou wrote:

“My best year yet. Thank you Phoenix.”

Like Steph and Seth Curry, Satou and Nyara can also be part of a roster together. Fans would be excited to watch the chemistry between the two. However, the two sisters have very different playing styles and roles on their teams.

While Satou is an All-Star, creates her own shots, and possesses a high basketball IQ, Nyara mainly plays off the ball with facilitators stitching a play for her. The younger sister is adept at paint scoring and working on the board, but Satou is an elite perimeter shooter and handles the ball like a guard. They would bring different skillsets to the Tempo, but they can gel together smoothly.
