During her four-year collegiate career with the Iowa Hawkeyes, Caitlin Clark developed a bond with Kate Martin that is unparalleled for anyone who has ever played the game. That was apparent during the Indiana Fever’s 87-78 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday.
As always after the game, the two shared a hug and chatted warmly for a while before parting. Their joyful reunion, posted by the WNBA’s official account, has gone viral on social media.
But it was an even more special moment as Caitlin Clark wasted no time posting a couple of stories on Instagram to mark the special occasion.
Since being drafted in the same class, the two have enjoyed very different paths. While Clark has turned into a superstar with the Indiana Fever, Kate Martin has been struggling to find a permanent home in the WNBA.
In her first two years, Martin has been waived by two teams. The Las Vegas Aces, the team that drafted her, let her go after one season, and after joining the Golden State Valkyries, where she quickly became a fan favorite, she was waived again just days before the season tipped off.
However, the 25-year-old’s arrival in LA marks a new chapter in the young player’s career, one filled with adjustment and a determination to prove herself as a valuable addition to the Sparks roster. It’s been a whirlwind journey that brought her to the Sparks, and the emotions that come with leaving one team behind to join another have not been easy for her.
Martin watched Clark and the Fever beat the Sparks from the sidelines as she was dealing with a quad injury. The Fever were able to notch their first win of the season, while the Sparks remain winless in their first two home games.
Caitlin Clark Leads Fever to First Win
After dropping the season opener at home to the Dallas Wings, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever bounced back with a huge win.
Clark was a big reason for the victory, as the 24-year-old led the team in scoring with 24 points, nine assists and four rebounds. While her usual 3-point shooting struggled, going 1-for-7 from deep, she made up for it in other areas with two steals and one block.
Clark headed into the 2026 campaign as one of the Fever’s clear bounce-back candidates. Her 2025 season was cut short after missing 13 games with multiple injuries. Yet, with the way she has started the new season, perhaps she could produce even more than what she offered in the past two seasons. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how Clark builds on her solid start to the 2026 season from here.
