“Sue Bird is Finally Free”: MAGA Supporters Troll Megan Rapinoe After Split With Longtime WNBA Legend

Sporting legends Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe broke off their engagement via an Instagram announcement on Friday. In a joint statement from the former couple, the Olympic gold medallists emphasized that it wasn’t an “easy decision.” They added that despite the split, they’ll carry with them the life spent together for nearly a decade.

One fan reacted to the news:

“Thank god. Sue is finally free.”

    Another fan added:

“Anyone that has their ears to the muff could see this coming from a mile away.”

    One more fan continued:

“Megan is on the Dem crazy and Sue wants off.”

    Another fan commented:

“So happy for Sue Bird. … You deserve so much better. Wishing you much happiness.”

    One fan tweeted:

“It took Sue long enough to realize.”

Rapinoe, the women’s soccer legend, is a loud critic of U.S. President Donald Trump and his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement. The two went back and forth in 2019 when Rapinoe said that she and her Team USA teammates would not visit the White House if invited by Trump.

Trump responded that Rapinoe “should win first before she talks.” Eventually, he relented and invited the team to Washington regardless of the outcome of the 2019 World Cup, which the Americans eventually won.

In February this year, Megan Rapinoe slammed the U.S. men’s national hockey team for accepting a White House invitation from Trump. Rapinoe said that the players were “co-opted by a clown.”

With that in the background, MAGA fans unsurprisingly trolled Rapinoe after the split with Sue Bird.

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe Also Ending Podcast Partnership

In August 2024, the “A Touch More: The Podcast,” co-hosted by Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe, was launched. Every Wednesday, the sporting greats discussed the hottest sports news, daily life stories and interacted with guests.

As part of the announcement of their breakup on Friday, the two also addressed the status of their show:

“Getting to create A Touch More: The Podcast and build a network around it has been a tremendous joy. The conversations, the laughter, the connection – it means more than we can put into words. While this chapter of doing the podcast together is ending, what we’ve built with you isn’t.”

In May 2025, Sue Bird started her “Bird’s Eye View” podcast, a platform that’s heavily focused on women’s basketball and the WNBA. Rapinoe could launch her show after ending her podcast with her former partner.
