Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White faced intense scrutiny from fans online after she didn’t defend Caitlin Clark from the officiating over her technical fouls. Clark picked up her fifth on Monday in the 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury. She’s now three technical fouls away from getting a one-game suspension.
Clark called out the officials over it, saying they can mark their calendars for when to suspend her after giving her a technical foul for clapping. On the other hand, White said Clark should be aware of the looming suspension.
“She’s gotta be aware, certainly,” White told reporters (via Fever reporter James Boyd). “I think there are some that we can do without. There are natural things that happen that the energy of the game creates when you do get those (techs), but there are some that we can be a little bit more in control of. So, yes, we’ll continue to remind her.”
Here’s how Clark’s fans reacted to White’s statement:
Caitlin Clark and Fever bounce back in heated clash with Mercury
Caitlin Clark and the Fever bounced back following a rough two-game stretch as they lost in consecutive outings to the Atlanta Dream on Thursday and Saturday. On Monday against the Mercury, they trailed 19-3 with 11 seconds left in the first quarter.
However, Clark turned the game on its head with her second-quarter blitz. She scored 15 of her 24 points in that span to drag the Fever back in the game. She shot 5 of 9, including 3 of 6 from deep, while dishing four assists. For the game, Clark had 24 points, nine assists and three turnovers on 47.1% field goal shooting.
The Fever won nine after leading by 21 early in the fourth. That’s when tempers flared between the teams. Caitlin Clark got into it with DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas. Sophie Cunningham and Myisha Hines-Allen also got involved. All four players received technical fouls. Allen got two and got ejected.
The Fever kept their cool through it all and returned to winning ways. The teams meet again on Wednesday, which could be another tense clash given how things ended on Monday.
