Sophie Cunningham Shares True Feelings on Angel Reese & Atlanta Dream After Franchise-Altering Move

Sophie Cunningham had only good things to say about new Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese and their ceiling heading into the new WNBA season. The Dream made a move that could benefit them greatly in the long run by acquiring Reese for two first-round picks.

Reese had been with the Chicago Sky, the team that drafted her, for two seasons. However, it felt like she was no longer the right fit there and now heads to Atlanta for a fresh start.

Sophie Cunningham was asked which team ‘scares’ her the most in the W this year, and the Indiana Fever guard gushed over, offering high praise for Atlanta.

“Atlanta’s looking tough. Very tough,” Cunningham said on her Show Me Something podcast on Monday. “Angel [Reese] going down there just adds another layer to Atlanta, and they’re already very, very good, so they’re looking great.”

When looking at the Dream’s roster, Reese has the potential to be a very good fit for the group. It was no secret that Atlanta needed some serious help at the center position, and the 6-foot-3 Reese will now provide just that. She should be a strong part of the Dream’s frontcourt. It will be fascinating to see what kind of season the former Sky star has in her first year in Atlanta.

Sophie Cunningham vs Angel Reese stats

The rivalry between Angel Reese and the Indiana Fever almost always feels like a soap opera, but Cunningham has had a couple of run-ins with Reese over the past two years. The Fever and the Sky met five times last year, but Cunningham and Reese didn’t face off in all of them due to injuries. They only matched up twice during Reese’s rookie season, which also happened to be Cunningham’s final season with the Phoenix Mercury.

The Indiana Fever and the Atlanta Dream are established contenders in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta has a deep and strong team that’s going to present a big challenge for Indiana, and Sophie Cunningham is well aware of the test ahead.

Indiana’s first matchup with Atlanta will come on June 5, with three more to follow. It’s going to be an extra tough matchup as long as Angel Reese is there.
