Sophie Cunningham Sends Gratitude-Filled Message to Her Hometown After Outpouring Love From Fans in 3-Day Basketball Showcase

Sophie Cunningham expressed gratitude to her fans with a love-filled message on social media as she wrapped up her three-day basketball event, which took place at Columbia College in Missouri.

The basketball event, hosted annually, serves as a showcase for female student-athletes throughout the United States. This was the Indiana Fever star’s fourth time hosting the event, which saw a massive outpouring of fans.

A video shared on X shows female athletes forming lengthy queues at the event to get Cunningham’s autograph between games. The Fever guard reacted to the video on X with a message.

“I love my hometown and the people in it<3,” Cunningham wrote.

Sophie Cunningham grew up playing basketball in Columbia, Missouri, before going on to play at the collegiate level for the Missouri Tigers.

She played 129 games for the team, averaging 17.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. She left as Mizzou’s all-time leading scorer.

She moved on from the university to the WNBA seven years ago, but continues to hold a deep connection to Missouri.

The Phoenix Mercury traded Cunningham to the Indiana Fever ahead of the 2025 WNBA season. She was with the Mercury for six seasons after being drafted there in 2019, averaging 7.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 182 games.

Sophie Cunningham gets candid about WNBA pay amid CBA negotiations

Sophie Cunningham did not mince her words when speaking about the WNBA’s pay during a conversation with Caleb Pressley on “Sundae Conversation.”

“Barely. But, we’re still surviving,” Cunningham said.

As players continue to voice their displeasure with the WNBA’s pay, pressure is mounting on the league to provide a more reasonable offer to the WNBPA.

Regardless of what happens in the CBA negotiations, Cunningham has secured her future, signing a deal with the international women’s basketball league named Project B, which is set to debut in late 2026.

Cunningham joins players like Nneka Ogwumike, Alyssa Thomas, Jonquel Jones, Jewell Loyd, Kamilla Cardoso and Kelsey Mitchell.
