Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has been clinical from three-point range since her return to action. After missing Thursday’s game against the Chicago Sky due to an elbow injury, Cunningham has made nine three-pointers on 11 attempts in her last two outings. On Tuesday against the Toronto Tempo, the veteran made 6 of 7 threes en route to posting a season-high 24 points in the Fever’s 113-91 blowout win.
In her post-game interview on USA Sports Network, Cunningham hilariously credited an “elbow injection” as the key to her hot shooting.
“I think that elbow injection really helped me, I’m not even gonna lie,” Cunningham said. “But no, on a real note, no, I knew it was only a matter of time before I start hitting my shots.
“I think it’s the same thing for kind of everyone on our team. Some nights it’s gonna be me, some nights it’s gonna be Lex [Lexie Hull], Caitlin [Clark], AB [Aliyah Boston], so we just have so many threats offensively … my teammates were also sharing the ball tonight and I think it just kinda shows the potential of our offense.”
The Fever assisted 25 of their 36 field goals, making 52.2% of their attempts. They were 13 of 30 from deep. Kelsey Mitchell was as surgical as Sophie Cunningham with her shooting, making 9 of 11 shots from the field, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc, scoring 27 points.
Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark recorded a 21-point, 14-assist double-double. She shot a measly 5-for-15 from the field, but went to the free-throw line 14 times, missing four attempts. Indiana won its fourth consecutive game, improving to 9-5 after a rough start.
Sophie Cunningham receives glowing praise from Kelsey Mitchell
Indiana Fever All-Star Kelsey Mitchell credited Sophie Cunningham for her recent turnaround. Mitchell called Cunningham the “glue stick” of the Fever, adding the team wouldn’t be as successful without the veteran.
“Sophie is like the glue stick to this team, man,” Mitchell said after the game. “We won’t be where we are without her energy, her effort, her ability to shoot the ball. It just opened up so many avenues for us. As a friend and as a sister, Sophie is one of them that you wanna look to for a lot of stuff, and so hats off to her for making it worth it.”
Sophie Cunningham said her elbow bothered her early on in the season, resulting in inconsistent offensive performances. However, getting it fixed with a PRP injection has helped her feel better and play to her potential again.
It’s critical for the Fever that she performs, given Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston’s struggles. If Cunningham and others can step it up, it will take the attention off the Fever’s centerpieces and help them find a rhythm.
