At this point, Raven Johnson and Caitlin Clark are more than happy to prove the naysayers wrong as they let the world know about their budding friendship. Johnson hasn’t been in Indiana for that long, but she’s been generous with her compliments for her WNBA icon of a teammate.
At a media availability on Thursday, the Fever rookie went as far as to say that basketball fans don’t know the real CC.
“She’s loving. She’s a goofy person. I think a lot of people don’t really know her outside of basketball…She has so much personality. That’s what people need to know about her.”
Raven Johnson, whose South Carolina squad was eliminated in the Final Four by Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes three years ago, added that she and her new buddy are driven by a common goal.
“I put the past in the past. When I put an Indiana Fever jersey on, I said, ‘Let’s try to win a championship…With her, that’s all she talks about.”
Rather than feed into the narrative that they can’t get along (which came about because of that 2023 incident in which Clark waved off Johnson), the two Fever guards have bonded over their quest to win it all in the WNBA.
Caitlin Clark Comments on Mentorship of Raven Johnson During Fever’s Preseason Preps
For her part, Caitlin Clark appears to be savoring the opportunity to mentor Raven Johnson. Earlier this week, she complimented the Fever rookie for being an inquisitive mind.
“She asks a lot of really great questions…Just trying to help her in every way I can.”
Clark added that she empathizes with Johnson’s situation of having to catch up on so much “terminology” in a short amount of time. If Johnson has Clark teaching her the Xs and Os of the Fever’s system, she’ll perhaps be brought up to speed in no time.
