On Sunday, Sophie Cunningham said in her “Show Me Something” podcast that she was frustrated by the one-year, $665,000 contract she received from the Indiana Fever. Cunningham’s comments earned mixed reviews from fans, prompting the veteran guard to tweet the following day.
Cunningham wrote on X to clarify her comments:
“I’m gonna shut this down right now. I’m not mad about the money… I just wanted more years because I love it here. I wanted to get a house so I could bring my dog and donkey to Indy with me. That’s it. That’s the truth. I think we have something very special here in Indiana!!”
In early November last year, after the hobbled Fever’s surprising playoff run, Sophie Cunningham told her fans through her podcast what she wanted for her next contract.
Cunningham said:
“I want that next contract so I can buy a house! I just want to feel homey and cozy, but I’m not decorating again until I’ve got a three-year contract in front of me.”
The former Phoenix Mercury guard decided to return to Indiana, but on a one-year deal. Cunningham told co-host West Wilson that she will go back to the Fever because “I just want to win.” She added that she would not put her “ego in front of things.”
Last year, the Fever only had Caitlin Clark for 13 games while other key contributors also suffered season-ending injuries. Indiana brought back its core this year, giving Sophie Cunningham a chance to win a championship.
Fans React to Sophie Cunningham’s Tweet Clarifying “Frustrating” Comment About Signing With Fever
Fans who wanted clarity following Sophie Cunningham’s “frustrating” comments about signing a one-year contract with the Fever got what they wanted. One fan wrote after Cunningham clarified her statement:
“I feel you proved your worth to get more years.”
Another fan added:
“I’m truly sorry you didn’t get what you were hoping for.”
One more fan continued:
“They’re going to re-sign you; you’re essential!”
Another fan commented:
“Let’s get this lady a long term contract and a house!!!!”
One fan tweeted:
“If CC wants you in Indy, you’re going to be in Indy.”
Last year, Sophie Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She was as good as advertised as a 3-and-D specialist, posting 46.9% shooting, including 43.2% from behind the arc. Cunningham often hounded the opposing team’s best perimeter players.
Another solid year from the 27-year-old guard could convince Fever GM Amber Cox to give her a new contract with more years.
