“Megan Rapinoe Is a Moron”: Clay Travis’ Attacks on Sue Bird’s Fiancee Continue After Opposing Donald Trump’s Invite to US Hockey Teams

Television analyst Clay Travis delivered sharp criticism of Megan Rapinoe — the soccer star and wife of WNBA legend Sue Bird — after she said the U.S. men’s hockey team looked “like clowns” for taking a congratulatory call from President Donald Trump following their gold medal win at the Winter Olympics.

Speaking through FBI Director Kash Patel’s phone, Trump congratulated the players and invited them aboard Air Force One. He also joked about inviting the women’s team — which had defeated Canada in overtime days earlier — saying he would face “impeachment” if he did not.

“The United States men’s hockey team, in their utter moment of glory, … ruined it for themselves because they allowed themselves to be totally co-opted by a clown,” Rapinoe said on the “A Touch More with Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe” podcast. “And now, you’re a clown. You look like a clown.”

Travis responded forcefully to Rapinoe’s remarks.

“Now, Megan Rapinoe, let me be clear about this, is a moron,” he said on “The Story with Martha MacCallum.” “I hope this gets clipped. I hope she sees it.”

“She believes that men should be able to compete in women’s soccer. She didn’t give that opinion until she quit playing herself, after she and her teammates were beaten five to two by 15-year-old boys in Dallas, Texas. Men would take all of the women’s soccer team spots if they were allowed to play.”

Travis was referring to the U.S. women’s national team’s 5-2 exhibition loss to the FC Dallas U-15 boys academy squad in April 2017.

Sue Bird’s Wife Megan Rapinoe Once Declined to Go to White House

In 2019, Rapinoe said she was “not going to the f**king White House” if the U.S. women’s soccer team won the World Cup.

After capturing the title, the team declined Trump’s White House invitation and instead visited the U.S. Capitol at the request of then–House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“I’m not going to the f**king White House,” Rapinoe said at the time. “No f**king way will we be invited to the White House.”

    Travis accused Rapinoe of hypocrisy.

“Moreover, she is a hypocrite, Martha, because she, in 2015, accepted a phone call from Barack Obama congratulating her team, which at that point in time was beloved by Americans of all political persuasions for winning the World Cup,” Travis continued.

“Do you know who else was there? Joe Biden, on the field, celebrating with them. This was considered standard. No Republicans complained. When you win a championship representing the United States of America, the president should call you.”

Following the Olympics, most members of the men’s hockey team accepted an invitation to tour the White House on Feb. 24, with Trump welcoming them in the Oval Office. The women’s team declined, citing academic and professional obligations during their season.
