Connecticut Sun guard Marina Mabrey spoke on her infamous incident involving Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark last season. Mabrey appeared on Friday’s episode of Sue Bird’s “Bird’s Eye View” podcast.
While speaking to Bird, Mabrey was asked about her thoughts on finding the perfect balance for scuffles on the court. She gave a candid answer, comparing her recent altercation with Sug Sutton in Unrivaled to her infamous run-in with Clark in 2025.
“I know when I went too far with things, it’s shameful,” Mabrey said. “My emotions of us losing and losing and losing and then she’s lowkey punking our team on top of it like that was too far.”
Mabrey continued, explaining how her involvement in the scuffle with Caitlin Clark led to a poor result for her team and took ownership of the incident.
“When you go to Unrivaled, the little scuffle between me and Sug (Sutton) was perfect cause it fueled the team and me. On the flip side, when you go to Indiana, everyone’s booing us, it feels like shit, and we end up losing by like 25. It’s like Marina, that’s your fault, buddy. You can’t do that.”
The incident Mabrey is referring to took place during the Sun-Fever game on June 18. The Fever won 88-71 as Caitlin Clark recorded 20 points and six assists. Meanwhile, Mabrey had a rough night, finishing with six points on 2-for-9 shooting.
A closer look at Marina Mabrey’s career-night in Unrivaled
Marina Mabrey exploded for a career-high 47 points against the Rose BC on Jan. 30. Entering that game, Mabrey’s Lunar Owls had only won a single game throughout the season. The team’s campaign took a hit even before the season started, as Napheesa Collier was ruled out due to injury.
With the Owls desperate for a win, Mabrey had the best game of her Unrivaled career, leading the team to an 85-75 victory over the reigning champions. While the Owls have suffered as a whole, Mabrey is having an excellent run in Unrivaled, averaging 26.8 points per game.
A significant jump considering Marina Mabrey has never averaged more than 15 ppg throughout her basketball career.
