The Indiana Fever is set to face the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, and Sophie Cunningham will be back in action after a long break. Before the teams went into the WNBA All-Star break, the Fever forward was under constant spotlight for her stance about transgender women in the league. And now, a women’s basketball analyst believes that Cunningham was seemingly rallying fans behind her stance.
Analyst Roberta reshared a poster of a pre-game fan rally supporting Cunningham’s stance on protecting “young girls in the locker room.” She also stated that the Fever star was “inciting” fans:
“There will be an anti-trans rally in Seattle tomorrow ahead of the Storm game against the Fever in support of Sophie Cunningham’s latest public transphobic statements. I thought it was online fans only. That’s what she’s inciting.”
The Storm fans and management often celebrate the LGBTQ+ community through pride events, pre-game plazas and in-arena giveaways. The city will host Tuesday’s game, which could make the aforementioned fan rally a little difficult, as Roberta said on X.
Meanwhile, the Fever will aim to begin their next phase with the same energy they had the last time the team was on the floor.
Journalist Brandi Kruse supports fan rally in support of Sophie Cunningham
Unlike Roberta, a few people in the sport even supported the fan rally. Brandi Kruse, a journalist and host of the podcast, unDivided with Brandi Kruse, shared her thoughts on the event and even called out Roberta for labeling it “anti-trans.”
Kruse first shared the event post and wrote:
“Join me, @WomenAreReals, @KnownHeretic, and female athletes for a rally to thank @sophaller for her bravery. Tomorrow ahead of the Storm/Fever game at 5pm outside Climate Pledge Arena! Wear your @xx_xyathletics gear if you have it!”
Kruse then called out Roberta for criticizing the event, writing on X:
“Anti-trans.” These people are unwell. Not anti anything. Pro truth and love!”
Sophie Cunningham has garnered a lot of support from the Republican Party due to her stance on the issue, besides fans and a few fellow players.
