Over the past few weeks, fans of the Indiana Fever have eagerly anticipated the next move of Sophie Cunningham, who was a free agent this offseason. Last week, the Fever announced that they were re-signing the 29-year-old guard for the 2026 WNBA season.
It’s worth noting, however, that Cunningham isn’t exactly thrilled with the deal she inked. On Monday’s episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast, the Fever guard bared her feelings on her new contract.
“I’m not even gonna lie. It’s a little, kind of, frustrating…It was a little weird, but this is a great wake-up call to not get comfortable. It lit a fire under my a** a bit more.”
Cunningham, who was traded by the Connecticut Sun to the Indiana Fever during the 2025 offseason, admitted that the circumstances she went through over the past year have not been conducive to lucrative contract offers.
“It’s tough because I came off an injury. I haven’t been in front of many teams, and I had a lot going on this offseason.”
Though Sophie Cunningham’s new deal might not have been what she was hoping for financially, she now gets an opportunity to continue her synergy with the Fever backcourt. On and off the court, Cunningham developed strong chemistry with the likes of Caitlin Clark and Lexie Hull.
Even with Clark, Cunningham, and a number of other Fever players going down with injury last season, the Fever made it all the way to the second round of the playoffs. Cunningham stated that she is now medically cleared, which bodes well for the Fever’s aspirations to go on another postseason stint.
“A Freakin’ Dawg”: Sophie Cunningham Dishes Out High Praise for Fever Rookie
Another player that will be sharing the backcourt with Sophie Cunningham this season is Raven Johnson. The no. 10 pick in the 2026 WNBA draft has already drawn rave reviews from Cunningham as the Fever commence their training camp.
“Raven Johnson is a freakin’ dawg. We had our first day of training camp and I just love her.”
Last year, it was Cunningham winning over the hearts of Fever fans with her hustle on the court. Johnson could become a new fan favorite in Indianapolis by showcasing her intangibles in her rookie year.
