Dan Dakich has given another divisive take, and this time, it’s about Angel Reese. The Sandy Brondello and Reese controversy led to varied opinions from all parts of the WNBA world. While some saw the Toronto Tempo head coach’s “protected species” phrase as a racial comment, others believed it was Australian slang. Former player-turned-analyst Dakich claimed that the Atlanta Dream center was chasing “attention.”
In a clip he posted on X from his show “DON’T@ME!” on Monday, Dakich stated that Brondello should not have apologized to Reese because what she said was common slang and not racial. He added that the WNBA players are grown women who should be able to take a phrase “that is absolutely not racist in nature.”
While reading the Tempo HC’s apology for Reese, the analyst said:
“Why should you (Brondello) not have used that? Are you (Reese) really that sensitive? Is it really that deep? The answer is no. You just need attention. ‘Oh my god, look, I see another opportunity.'”
After the league announced Brondello’s one-game suspension, the center said that she was “grateful” the league took action against the coach. Earlier, Dakich also claimed that Sophie Cunningham was the face of the franchise, given the marketing deals she has been bagging recently.
Angel Reese had a difficult game against rivals, the Sky
Angel Reese played just 20 minutes in Sunday’s game as she suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter. Before her exit, she had a difficult game, as she shot 3-of-13 from the floor and contributed eight points and five rebounds.
After the injury, the center headed to the locker room and did not return to the court.
After the game, the Dream head coach Karl Smesko told the media that Reese wanted to play after sitting out for some time. However, the coach did not allow her, as she was seemingly in pain. Regardless, the team won the game 93-91, on the back of Allisha Gray’s 29 points, shooting 7-11 from the floor.
Fortunately, the Dream will now go into a long break for the All-Star weekend, which will give the center ample time to recover. They will face the Dallas Wings when they take the floor on July 29.
