Angel Reese drew the attention of the WNBA and its fans after calling out Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello for her “protected species” comment during Atlanta’s matchup against the expansion team. Brondello publicly apologized to Reese via a post on X (formerly Twitter), after which the league suspended her for one game.
Ahead of the Dream’s matchup against Chicago on Sunday, Reese accepted Brondello’s apology, while also reiterating that there’s “no place in the league for discrimination from anyone, from fans to coaches to players.”
Former DIII player-turned-YouTube creator Michael Curley took issue with Angel Reese’s apology, claiming Reese never addressed that Brondello’s comments did not have any racist undertones in the first place, since the phrase is commonly used in her homeland of Australia.
Curley said on X:
“Yep, that’s Sandy’s career done… Angel doubled down on believing the remark was racist even 48 hours later… You don’t recover from that label being put on you in the W…”
While Reese did not directly address the phrase itself, the Atlanta star was, in fact, ready to put the whole thing behind her, saying:
“The WNBA is supposed to be positive, and we’re going in a great light right now, so I just want to continue and move forward.”
Angel Reese Suffered A Non-Contact Injury Against the Sky
Reese’s matchup against the Sky was interrupted by a non-contact injury while going up for a layup. Head coach Karl Smesko spoke on the injury, claiming Reese looked in pain during their timeout before leaving the game abruptly.
“Yeah, it’s hard because we’re in the timeout. It seemed like a really long timeout, and there wasn’t a lot being said because we were all just looking at Angel. When I was looking at her, it seemed like she was in a lot of pain. She wanted to go out there and keep playing because she’s competitive. She wants to win the game,” Smesko said in the postgame conference.
Atlanta will return to the court after the All-Star break as they take on the Dallas Wings in Dallas on July 29.
