Dallas Wings’ Azzi Fudd Makes Her Feelings Clear on Being Labeled as Only a Shooter

Azzi Fudd had her first double-digit WNBA outing in a 92-69 win over the Washington Mystics. She scored 12 points, shooting 6 of 9 from the floor, with two rebounds, three assists, and a block.

Fudd was the No. 1 overall pick at the 2026 WNBA Draft because of her elite shooting, floor spacing, and perimeter defense. However, she believes that only one aspect of her game is being highlighted so far.

She acknowledged that the three-point shooting is one of her strengths, but she offers a lot more than that. Fudd shed light on the fact that she is great at reading defense and adjusting to whatever the situation demands from her.

“I’m just reading what the defense and what the game gives me.  I know I’m a good three-point shooter. and people like to limit me to that, but I’m more than just that,” she said. “It’s been nice to just read what’s in our offense, what how the defense is playing, and I have incredible teammates that get me open.”

Fudd has played three games so far in her rookie season, averaging 7.7 points, 1.3 rebounds, one assist, and one steal per game. She is averaging 20.7 minutes per game coming off the bench for the Wings.

Dallas’ decision to draft her as the No. 1 pick over other great prospects has also been criticized by some. But it’s too early to give a verdict on whether it was a good decision. Considering she dropped 12 points in the last game, Fudd is showing the potential that she has.

Jose Fernandez on Azzi Fudd Getting Limited Minutes

Head coach Jose Fernandez recently went off on his players, calling them out for being selfish. Fernandez, at a post-game press conference, said that he told his players that they have to look in the mirror and hold themselves accountable for losing games.

He also talked about the players who are coming off the bench for limited minutes. In his opinion, instead of worrying about their time on the floor, players should focus on maximizing their output.

“Minutes here, minutes there. Whatever minutes [Awak Kuier] gets, with her size, she can protect the basket,” Fernandez said. “Correct? So, I don’t know. Whatever minute she gets, or Maddy [Siegrist] gets, or [Alanna Smith] gets, or Fudd gets, just defend. Make use of your minutes, make shots, play the right way.”

Fernandez’s criticism came after the Wings lost 86-90 against the Lynx.
