Analyst Jason Whitlock sparked massive speculation on Friday after Stephanie White announced the latest injury update on Caitlin Clark. White said that Clark had been ruled out of the Indiana Fever’s upcoming game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday.
Clark tweaked her back in Wednesday’s 111-109 loss to the Phoenix Mercury.
She took multiple shots to her body in the second quarter after she landed on Valeriane Ayayi’s foot on a three-point attempt and then apparently got kneed in the groin by Alyssa Thomas. Thomas also pressed down on her neck. Despite that, Whitlock believes Clark’s absence is related to an alleged rift with White.
“Does that sound like a coach who lost her favorite player?” Whitlock replied to reporter Chloe Peterson’s tweet. “White and Clark cannot co-exist. Clark quit. This is her trade-demand moment.”
In that video, White said she’s unsure for how long Clark will be out. However, she sounded optimistic that Clark could recover for the game after the Sparks clash before the July 5 contest against the Las Vegas Aces. Indiana will have a near-week-long break.
White’s comments didn’t suggest what Whitlock speculated. However, she sounded optimistic that Clark could recover in time for the July 5 contest against the Las Vegas Aces. Indiana will have a near-week-long break after their upcoming game against the Sparks.
Whitlock also noted that when Clark headed to the locker room, she didn’t look in pain or see a trainer accompanying her.
There have been no reports from anyone else in the media about Clark eyeing a trade or having a rift with White. Whitlock hasn’t cited any sources, either.
Stephanie White Was Surprised By Referees Not Reviewing Alyssa Thomas’ Foul On Caitlin Clark
Stephanie White was surprised that the referees didn’t review Alyssa Thomas’ flagrant foul on Caitlin Clark in Wednesday’s game. The WNBA suspended Thomas for one game after making illegal contact on Clark’s neck while the latter was down on the floor.
“I didn’t see it in real time, yeah, I was surprised,” White told reporters on Friday (via Fever reporter Tony East). “I was more surprised that it wasn’t seen by the officials in real time.”
White coached Thomas during her stint in Connecticut. She led Thomas and Co. to a first-round series win over Clark and the Fever in 2024.
