Monica McNutt faced backlash from Taylor Swift and Caitlin Clark’s fans on Wednesday after she was caught calling out the pop star’s New York Knicks fandom and wanted her out of the building.
“She’s not a Knicks fan, get out of here girl,” McNutt said.
The Knicks radio host also faced scrutiny from Caitlin Clark’s fans. Clark and Swift have a great relationship and after McNutt slammed the pop star, the Fever star’s fans remembered the Knicks employee’s previous jabs at their favorite player.
Despite Clark’s dominating rookie season, McNutt questioned her claim to the Rookie of the Year. In her early rankings, McNutt favored Reese as her former team, the Chicago Sky, were were in a playoff position, while Clark’s Indiana Fever weren’t.
Once Clark’s Fever surged in the second half of the season, McNutt changed her stance. However, her other takes on Clark remained strong as she claimed that the Fever star wasn’t solely responsible for the WNBA’s emerging popularity.
Clark had the most-watched games on every national channel, so the numbers debunked the majority of those narratives. After McNutt said Swift should “get out,” Clark’s fans took issue with it.
“Monica McNutt telling Taylor Swift to “get out of here” because she is supposedly not a real Knicks fan feels familiar,” one X user said. “New fan. Not a real fan. You don’t understand the game. You weren’t here before. This is the same gatekeeping energy Caitlin Clark fans have dealt with for years from her. Sports grow when more people care. Broadcasters should welcome that, not police it.”
“This tracks. Monica McNutt HATES transcendent greatness. First Caitlin Clark, now Taylor Swift,” another said.
“So Monica McNutt doesn’t like Caitlin Clark or Taylor Swift,” one fan added.
“And Monica HATES CC! People like her can’t stand the fact that the WNBA got popular because of Clark. No one is marketable or relatable in that league,” one fan said.
“The Caitlin fans that are informing the Taylor fans of McNutt’s name and @ is killing me like we’re always working together,” another said.
“It’s @McNuttMonica she hates Caitlin Clark too, jealousy is in her blood,” one fan added.
Caitlin Clark gets real about criticism of her body language and emotions
Caitlin Clark has often been scrutinized for expressing herself on the court, whether that’s trash-talking, run-ins with her coaches, or crash-outs with referees. On Monday, Clark addressed the criticism with a thoughtful answer.
“I don’t think I would be as good a player if I were very stoic and straight-faced all the time,” she told reporters. “You know, I always think you want your mind to be neutral, but like you also want to be excited and passionate and fiery and fisty, and maybe you have a moment with the ref in there, or maybe you get super excited and get the crowd hyped up like that.”
Clark added:
“That’s what’s so fun about competitive sports, that’s what I like watching, competitive sports, and basketball is like one of the best environments to do that because the fans are right on top of you … I think that’s why a lot of people have enjoyed watching over the course of my career … I wouldn’t be the player that I am if it weren’t for everyone who was cheering me on. People pushing me to be better, you know.”
Caitlin Clark went onto hit the game-winner against the Washington Mystics later in the night and continued to show her fire after mocking former NCAA rival Cotie McMahon. Clark flashed the three-point sign in her face, adding to the list of her engaging highlights over the years.
