Like every season, predictions and award lists have become a popular trend. Whether it is Rookie of the Year projections or breakdowns of a franchise’s best players, these articles provide an opportunity for debate among fans across the league. This Wednesday, USA Today released its yearly season award predictions, including First-Team All-WNBA selections, which notably omitted Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.
USA Today’s list features five players who are having sensational seasons. The problem is that the list does not include Clark, who is also having one of the most impressive seasons. While the First-Team All-WNBA selections deserve recognition, the future Hall of Famers’ omission is a questionable decision, especially considering her career accomplishments and the eyeballs she brings.
The full list is as follows:
A’ja Wilson, C, Las Vegas Aces
Breanna Stewart, F, New York Liberty
Paige Bueckers, G, Dallas Wings
Rhyne Howard, G, Atlanta Dream
Olivia Miles, G, Minnesota Lynx
While Wilson and Stewart are locks, even Olivia Miles’ performances at an outstanding level in the absence of Napheesa Collier can be debated, but the rest are all open for discussion.
Clark, who was named First-Team All-WNBA after a historic rookie season, is coming back from an injury-riddled sophomore season and has looked a bit rusty so far. However, once she gets her legs under her, she should return to the level she has always shown.
The 24-year-old is eighth in scoring and first in assists, averaging 18.7 points and 7.9 assists per game this season. It’s understandable why her name could have been left out in place of Paige Bueckers and Rhyne Howard, as those teams are near the top of the standings and performing well above expectations, while others are still trying to find their groove.
As mentioned, Clark is not only one of the best guards in the league, but there is a case to be made that she is one of the most watched and intriguing players in league history. While the list is still early and based on team performances so far, it is still surprising that a player of Clark’s caliber would be excluded from the award discussion.
