Caitlin Clark and A’ja Wilson name Serena Williams as their “American Sports Hero” in 4th of July Tribute

Caitlin Clark and A’ja Wilson were featured in ESPN’s latest video, where the two superstars paid tribute to their American sports hero, Serena Williams. The tennis legend recently came back to the pros after retiring in 2022, as the doubles partner of her sister, Venus Williams, at the Queen’s Club Championship. And now, WNBA royalty paid homage to the stalwart of American women athletes.

Williams also played her first singles match after four years at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships, which ended in a three-set loss for her. However, Clark and Wilson still kept her at the top of their lists when asked about their idols in women’s sports.

In ESPN’s video on the Fourth of July, Clark said:

“She was a great athlete and general, and everybody can appreciate that, and she broke a lot of barriers in what she did. She is the definition of a competitor, always admired her.”

After Dawn Staley named the popular American sports icon Jackie Joyner-Kersee as her pick, Wilson included Williams on her list, and she mentioned former WNBA player Lisa Leslie and soccer legend Mia Hamm as well.

“Those are probably like three who came to mind.”

Caitlin Clark and A’ja Wilson are two of the most popular superstars in the league, and they were involved in a recent debate on who was the “Face of the WNBA” after player-turned-analyst and one of the icons on Wilson’s list, Leslie, labeled the Aces center as the face of the league.

The Fever are set to face the Aces without Caitlin Clark

While fans were excited to watch Caitlin Clark’s duel with A’ja Wilson in their high-profile matchup on July 5, both superstars might be on the bench. Clark was sidelined with her nagging back injury for Sunday’s game, and Wilson sat out the last couple of games, including the Commissioner’s Cup Finals, due to a right ankle injury.

Even though the two superstars might not face each other, the game will surely be a big one for both teams. On the one hand, the Fever will look to get another win without their superstar. On the other hand, the Aces will aim to move on from their Commissioner’s Cup Finals loss and focus on the regular season once again.
