Caitlin Clark was booked with her fifth technical foul of the season vs the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday. In Fever’s 86-77 win, Clark received a foul for clapping empathically. Paige Bueckers also had a similar experience in May vs the Atlanta Dream. However, Bueckers’ foul was rescinded after assessment. Clark, on the other hand, wasn’t so lucky.
Paige Bueckers appeared on SportsCenter on Wednesday and reacted to Clark’s incident.
“What I have learnt is clapping is like the non negotiable. So I’mma try to stay away from clapping. No promises, but I don’t wanna keep losing money,” she said about referee’s decision for clapping.
She also defended the referees and provided some context for the situations both she and Clark got into.
“Don’t get me in trouble now. To throw context in there, officiating is an extremely hard job. I would not wanna be a ref. It’s hard to officiate when last year it got pretty physical at times, it was like WWE Smackdown sometimes. So they obviously try to set the tone at the beginning of the season that they wanted to clean it up and make it a safer cleaner game. We are just competitors, we wanna win. We show passion, we show fight and sometimes it might get a little overboard. And it’s on the refs to decide for that, it’s hard to read.”
During a possession in the third quarter, Paige Bueckers suffered a foul against Atlanta. After the foul, she clapped her hands too hard, which was too much for the referees. It was surprising when the technical foul was issued for unsportsmanlike conduct. She was assessed $500 in fines, but that was rescinded.
Caitlin Clark paid a $1000 fine after the technical foul. After getting called for a personal foul, she got tangled with Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner. She was then issued a technical foul for clapping and instigating.
The Phoenix Mercury get revenge on Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever
Twice in two days, the Fever and the Mercury have played against each other. In the first game, Indiana got the better of Phoenix with an 86-77 win. However, the Mercury came back strong.
They fought out a close 111-109 win after trailing in the first half. Kahleah Copper led the Mercury with 28 points and 3 rebounds. Alyssa Thomas had 24 points, 4 rebounds and 8 assists. Noemie Brochant, DeWanna Bonner, and Valeriane Vokosavljevic also contributed with 12, 13, and 19 points each.
For Fever, Kelsey Mitchell scored 30 points with 6 assists. Aliyah Boston had 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. It was a decent night for Clark as well. She scored 19 points and had 8 assists. However, it wasn’t enough against an inspired Mercury team.
