“You’re Lucky”: Jon Sumrall Loses Cool at SEC Media Days, Threatens Action for Ringing Phone

Jon Sumrall will have the task of pulling the Florida Gators out of the mire they find themselves in following the firing of Billy Napier, but many believe he has the tools to succeed and take the Gators to a place of strength.

But if a media darling was one that fans were expecting, there wasn’t too much to be happy about, as the Florida coach seemingly lost his cool in front of the press at SEC media days when someone’s phone began ringing.

“You’re lucky I’m not gonna throw this freaking podium. I would say, ‘Who is that?’ but I’m not going to embarrass anybody,” Sumrall sternly said, making it clear that if this was a team meeting, the person whose phone rang wouldn’t be in the room.

Urban Meyer Hopeful of a Strong Year for Jon Sumrall and Florida

Urban Meyer’s rich pedigree and historic importance to Florida football means that a pat on the back from him can mean great things for your future, and that’s what Jon Sumrall got from the former head coach.

“I was active in recruiting coach Sumrall a little bit to come to Florida, I really admire the guy. I didn’t know him at all. I just loved his toughness. I loved when you talked to him. He didn’t complain about NIL and about transfers. He talked about practicing and he talked about how you win in the SEC and the offensive, defensive alliance. And I was like “whoa,” Meyer said on “The Triple Option” podcast.

The Florida Gators will take the field against Florida Atlantic Owls on Sept. 5 in Gainesville to get their season going.
