Georgia’s Kirby Smart has been vocal about his take on the SEC’s separation from the NCAA. The veteran head coach believes that the SEC breaking away from the NCAA will be great for the future of the conference.
Smart recently made an appearance on Get Up on ESPN, where he reaffirmed his stance on the matter. His primary concern is the lack of decision-making power in the current structure, and breaking away will give all the control to the conference.
“I have actually been saying that for a long time to our president and our administrators,” he said. “11 years ago, my first SEC head coaches meeting, I had a coach tell me, ‘We will not get anything done in these meetings because we don’t have any power or any control.’”
“Until [the SEC] gets governance and we have someone that actually has the power to make decisions, or we can make decisions within our own community, we’re not going to have much control,” he added.
Smart said that the current situation with the NCAA is unfortunate, but it’s a reality that he has accepted for now. However, Smart believes that if the conference comes together, they might be able to get full control. In his opinion, the SEC becoming independent from the NCAA is the best alternative right now.
The Georgia Bulldogs are coming off a 12-2 season, including 7-1 in the conference. They’ve made some valuable additions to the roster in this offseason, including QB Bryson Beaver, CB Gentry Williams, and RB Dante Dowdell.
Smart has been one of the most successful college football coaches in recent years, winning the national championship in 2021 and 2022. With a stacked squad, he’d be looking to make another run for the ultimate glory.
Kirby Smart will Support SEC Breaking Away from NCAA
Smart’s take on the SEC’s future hasn’t changed in a while. He has openly talked about his wish to become independent from the NCAA so that everybody could play by the same rules.
During the SEC Spring Meetings in May, Smart said:
“I’ve been a huge advocate that if we can’t find rules that everybody plays by, then we should play our own. I’m not afraid of that. I’m not afraid to break away and say that our conference is strong enough.”
The landscape of college sports is constantly evolving. We have seen some major changes being made in recent years, and if the SEC comes together to back Smart, it wouldn’t be surprising if the conference breaks away from the NCAA.
