Tennis legend Serena Williams is all set for her highly anticipated return to professional tennis after a four-year hiatus since her last match at the 2022 US Open. Her official return to the media has also been at the Queen’s Club in London, where she is all set to team up with Canada’s 19-year-old sensation Victoria Mboko for a doubles match. The American legend opened up on a wide range of things that led to her return, while also shedding light on a possible singles return.
The 44-year-old legend will step onto the Queen’s Club grass court alongside Victoria Mboko, and during her press meet, Williams spoke about feeling both joy and stress as she prepares for her grass court showdown. She highlighted how her family has been crucially supportive of her decision, while also reminding everyone around that she has not ruled out her singles return.
While she touched on several different aspects during her press meet, here are the three key elements that help shed light on her current status within the world of tennis and what fans can expect from her historic comeback.
The Perfect Time to Get Back on Court
For Williams, there has not been a more perfect time to have finally laced up her tennis shoes for another round of professional tennis action than now. She opened up her press meet by mentioning the enduring support that she has been receiving from her family and how it has been an easy way into her comeback, especially due to her kids not being in school:
“Everyone is so supportive, and they were like, ‘What we’re you thinking, it’s summer time, kids aren’t in school,’ so it’s a perfect time to get out there and have fun and see what happens,” she said (1:04).
Serena Williams Not Ruling Out On A Singles Comeback
While Williams has not ruled out getting into a singles competition, the American was hesitant in giving out an official decision in this regard, citing how her training needs to go up another level to be able to get into singles. At the same time, she also reminded her fans how her journey is not focused on winning but to just have fun and enabling her kids to see their mom in action:
“This whole journey, I’m not putting any pressure on myself, had enough pressure. There are so many elements: my kids getting to see me play, Olympia is a little older, Adria is very young, and being an athlete is best thing you can be at the top level and to be able to do that for the one last time is kinda cool,” she said (1:33).
The former World No. 1 continued:
“For singles, I can’t say ya or I can’t say no, I probably need to train more if I wanna play singles, and we’ll see if I get there, and that’s not my journey right now,” she said (2:15).
Serena Williams’ Impressions Of Victoria Mboko
Serena Williams spoke about being impressed with Victoria Mboko when she saw the Canadian sensation first play in a Montreal game last year, recalling how she was taken aback by her play style.
“I remember seeing her in Montreal, that’s the one she won, and what I liked the most about her is that the next time she played, she kept winning. I love that. It reminded me a lot of myself. Sometimes you win one and you have little bit of of low, which is normal, but I loved her drive,” she said (3:38).
Serena Williams and Victoria Mboko will enter the HSBC championships with a No. 3 seeding and will square off against Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.
