What Happened With Emma Raducanu And Ex-Coach Francisco Roig? Brit Spills Amid Backlash

Emma Raducanu and Francisco Roig parted ways following the Brit’s second-round exit at the 2026 Australian Open. Raducanu has been changing coaches on the fly as she aims to recapture her form from 2021 when she won the US Open.

Before the Indian Wells, she had re-hired Mark Petchey as her head coach, but on an ad-hoc agreement, as he also had his own broadcasting contracts to deal with during the year.

Raducanu’s coaching selection and decision-making have become a point of debate. Recently, she opened up about her split with Roig after the Australian Open. It was shocking to learn that it was Roig who initiated the thought of splitting up.

“Yeah I mean after Australia, me and Francis were talking and we have a great relationship so we could have a really open and honest conversation and he ended up just saying, ‘Look I don’t think you know this is going in the way that we both want it to so he ended it really,'” Raducanu said.

“And I think it was in a way, I think we had a few moments where we weren’t agreeing on a few things. Other than that we still maintain a great relationship and I’ve seen him here and it’s been great to see a familiar face, a good face around and yeah it’s nice to see him. We had a great chat and it’s all good.”

Emma Raducanu’s Reason For Not Sticking With Just One Coach

Emma Raducanu also opened up on why she no longer believes in sticking with just one coach. After her divorce from Francisco Roig, Raducanu was accompanied by hitting partner Alexis Canter on the road. Now, for Indian Wells and Miami, she will also have Mark Petchey.

In her interview with BBC Sport, Raducanu wants to return to her dominant self naturally rather than pressuring herself to sticking with a coach even though it’s not working out.

“Right now, it’s more about bringing my instincts back out, getting back in touch with myself. I have had a lot of people telling me what to do, how to play, and it hasn’t necessarily fit,” she said. “So I want to come back to my natural way of playing. That takes time to relearn because that’s something that has been coached out of me a little bit.

“I don’t necessarily want to have one coach in the role because anyone I bring in is straight away going to be scrutinized – even if it’s a trial. I might feel the pressure to stick with them, even if it’s not necessarily the right decision.”

Raducanu also shared that she is comfortable around Petchey, who has joined the British star for the third time as coach.
