Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams has had a disastrous campaign since returning to professional tennis at 45. The five-time Wimbledon champion has now become the first former WTA No. 1 to lose 10 consecutive matches since the rankings were first published in 1975.
Williams is 0-7 this season after her latest setback against Kaitlin Quevedo in the first round of the Madrid Open. This year, the veteran American has entered seven tournaments as a wildcard entrant. Still, she has failed to win any of those matches, urging fans to react angrily.
Fans online were quick to take note of Williams’ ongoing struggles and didn’t hold back their vociferous opinions while lashing out at the 45-year-old American.
“Exactly why I’m not a fan of the comeback. It’s just damaging her legacy,” one fan commented.
“Venus has no shame taking wcs. Also ruining her efficiency stats. Braindead,” another fan commented.
“She keeps humiliating herself. Retiring is not a bad thing. You should know when to die a hero,” yet another fan commented.
Fans continued their attack on Williams, with many stating that she should be prevented from receiving any more wildcard spots in future tournaments to allow other credible players to play at WTA events.
“Venus is 10 years past her prime. Time to stop giving her wild cards. 19 wild cards in the last 5 years. They have all been wasted when they could be given to young player to help kick-start their career,” one fan commented.
“The unlimited WC for VW needs to stop and go to young players who well deserve them!” another fan commented.
“Next time, she will lose 11 consecutive WTA matches for the first time in her career. And then 12 after that. A Wild Card well spent!” yet another fan commented.
Venus Williams to Continue Her Madrid Open Run in Doubles Alongside Katie Boulter
Despite a disappointing loss in the singles, Williams continues her run at the Caja Magica as she is scheduled to play her women’s doubles opener alongside Katie Boulter on Thursday. Speaking about Boulter, Williams said she was happy to say yes to the Brit’s offer of pairing up for doubles at the Madrid Open.
“She asked me to play, or her coach did. I would like to think she asked me to play, and I was happy to say yes. She’s got great energy. She’s got a great attitude. She’s a fighter. I’m looking forward to playing with her because I think our energies will really match,” Williams said.
Williams and Boulter will play their opening match in women’s doubles against Jiang Xinyu and Xu Yifan of China on Thursday.
