Karolina Muchova has admitted she and Serena Williams lacked a little bit of chemistry after the pair suffered a first-round exit in Berlin.
Williams, playing her second match since her return from retirement, teamed up with Muchova to take on Erin Routliffe and Giuliana Olmos in the first round. The American-Czech pair fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, bringing their campaign to an early end.
Speaking to Canal+ Sport after the loss, Muchova reflected on the match and the expectations she and Williams had from each other.
“We probably lacked a bit of coordination. There were moments where one of us would expect the other to do something and it didn’t happen, and then we got a bit confused. The chemistry wasn’t fully there. It would have helped, but we left it as it was,” said Muchova.
Serena Williams on teaming up with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Open
After their early exit at the Berlin Open, Serena Williams and Karolina Muchova addressed the media. Williams was asked about her return to tennis, receiving a Wimbledon wildcard, and how she felt on court in Berlin. She was also asked about the takeaways from her latest match.
“I felt actually more nimble and more sturdy and quicker than the first match in Queens. Yeah, I felt pretty good, just physically and quickness, which I think you need a lot of on grass,” said Williams.
Muchova said that if they had gotten a little more practice time together, things might have been different.
“I think that’s maybe what we missed a little bit. Maybe if we get a little more practices to get to know who’s playing on which side… So I think it’s important but we didn’t have that much time but still had fun on the court and and I think it’s important anyway just to go out there have fun and and play our best,” said Muchova at the press conference.
