Serena Williams’ Childhood Coach Warns Alcaraz & Sinner About Big Factor That Could Stop Them From Winning Indian Wells

Serena Williams and Venus Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci, explained one aspect of the climate in California that can favor lower seeds pulling off major upsets against top seeds like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the Indian Wells Open (Masters 1000), which starts on March 2.

In his social media post, Macci explained how the windy conditions at the maiden ATP Masters 1000 event can play a significant role in deciding who wins a closely fought rally or the match as a whole. Further, he shared how it can give players an excellent opportunity to spring a surprise against some top names in the tournament.

“The wind if breezy at Indian Wells/ Miami can give players a better shot at Alcaraz and Sinner. It can be the wildcard, as the margins are so close, and bang, you win or lose a few points and matches just because of Windy. #atptour,” Macci wrote on X.

All the top names in men’s tennis are set to feature in the maiden Masters 1000 event of the year, with no withdrawals announced so far. Like the men, the women will also be squaring off against each other in this prestigious event, with 1000 WTA points on the line. Fans and analysts are speculating whether Williams will be making a grand comeback at the event in California next week.

Top Tennis Journalist Confirmed Serena Williams’ Exclusion From the Indian Wells Open

Top journalist Jon Wertheim made an appearance on the Tennis Channel, where he discussed Williams’ potential comeback date and event this year, while confirming that while it was not the ATX Open where the 23-time Grand Slam champion played, the same is going to be the case with the Indian Wells Open.

“I feel like everyone’s sort of playing around with this, and there’s a lot of speculation. I mean, this could be one of the stories of the year for 2026, depending on how this goes. The Williams camp has been very tight-lipped, as they’re entitled to be,” Wertheim said.

“In some ways, this is sort of teasing and very much on brand with Serena. They’re sort of non-denial denials. I’ve heard two names, and I’m curious. I mean, you guys, everyone’s been whispering about this,” he added.

While the tennis fraternity continues to speculate about Williams’ potential comeback this year, it will be solely up to Williams and her camp to decide and announce when the tennis legend returns to court, since she became eligible to play on the WTA circuit on February 22.
