There are very few women who have defeated both Venus Williams and her sister Serena Williams in a professional tennis game. There is only one player who is active and has defeated the Williams sisters. Her name is Ajla Tomljanovic, and she recently revealed how she has been able to give her best against the legendary duo.
After defeating Venus 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 32 matchup in Austin, Tomljanovic shared how she can get the best out of herself while facing the legendary sisters.
“Somehow Venus and Serena tend to bring the best out of me mentally because I always kind of think, ‘what would they do?’ in that moment. I try to make it work for me, not against me,” she said.
Tomljanovic is the only currently active player with head-to-head wins against both Williams siblings in singles competition. She defeated Serena Williams in the third round of the 2022 US Open, and it was the last time the 23-time Grand Slam champion played a professional tennis match.
Beating Williams in Austin on Tuesday has put Tomljanovic in a rare group, but it’s important to note that both of these wins have come at a time when the Williams sisters were in the declining stages of their respective careers.
Players Who Defeated Both Serena and Venus Williams in Same Tournament
There are only seven other players in WTA history who have defeated the legendary Williams sisters in the same tournament.
Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario defeated Serena and Venus at Sydney 1998. Steffi Graf beat Serena and Venus at Sydney 1999. Martina Hingis defeated both sisters at the 2001 Australian Open. Kim Clijsters beat both at the 2002 WTA Finals and again at the 2009 US Open. Lindsay Davenport defeated both at the 2004 Los Angeles event. Justine Henin beat both at the 2007 US Open. Jelena Janković accomplished the feat at the 2010 Rome tournament.
Serena Williams and Venus Williams dominated women’s tennis for a long time. Arriving on the circuit in the mid-1990s, Serena secured her first Grand Slam singles title at age 17 at the 1999 US Open. Since then, the two sisters have won a combined 30 Grand Slam singles titles, including Venus’ seven titles. Together, they have also won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic doubles gold.
