Hailey Baptiste left the Roland-Garros court with a crippling knee injury, which has now been met with an unfortunate diagnosis. The medical team has now diagnosed Baptiste with an ACL and meniscus tear, as confirmed by her agent. The news has sent shockwaves across, as her recovery time could lead to months, severely hampering the upcoming endeavors that could have led her to great success.

Hailey Baptiste had entered the French Open with great ambitions to knock the tournament off its feet. However, during her bout with China’s Wang Xiyu, Baptiste met with a critical fall that led her to collapse backward, injuring her knee in the process. Baptiste let out a painful cry, which prompted the medical team to intervene and escort her out of the arena.

Since the event, Baptiste had gone through preliminary rounds of medical checks, and after a thorough evaluation, doctors confirmed that the American had suffered crucial injuries to her ACL and meniscus, which are two important components of the knee that help in stabilizing movements.

Former tennis player Jim Courier got the word out via an interview with a sports channel, revealing that Baptiste’s agent confirmed the American’s current medical condition and that she will require at least six months to fully recover.

The disaster struck just as Baptiste started riding high on a spree of recent success, including a top-25 ranking and making it to her first WTA 1000 semifinal, alongside beating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka during the Madrid Open quarter-finals.

Hailey Baptiste Talks About Defeating Sabalenka

Hailey Baptiste led the biggest upset during the Madrid Open, where she beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-2, 7(8)-6(6). The match became an instant classic, and after the bout, Baptiste spoke about what it took to beat Sabalenka:

“I definitely wanted to make her feel uncomfortable any way I could by trying to hit drop shots, short slice, heavier balls, just didn’t want to give her rhythm, because that’s what she’s good at,” she said (0:40).

It remains to be seen if Baptiste’s current diagnosis leads to yet another serious setback, but the time period is expected to test the resilience of the rising star.
