Marta Kostyuk recently acknowledged Mirra Andreeva, praising her hard work, after securing the Madrid Open. Fans have taken a dig at the Ukrainian athlete, questioning her propaganda against the Russian athletes.
Kostyuk recently produced a notable performance at the Madrid Open, besting top-notch athletes, including Jessica Pegula, Linda Noskova, Anastasia Potapova, and more, to advance to the finals. In the last round, she locked horns with Andreeva and secured an unexpected 6-3, 7-5 win against the Russian athlete. This marked the Ukrainian’s third WTA 1000 title after her recent second WTA win in Rouen.
Shortly after this feat, she sat for a conversation with WTA, where she was asked about the expectations of being a child prodigy just like Andreeva. Acknowledging the latter’s hard work and admitting that the Russian has handled things much better than her, she said:
“First of all, I think I’ve been doing much worse than Mirra, at that age, she’s handling it much better, you know, she, she’s a consistent top 10 player, has two Masters titles. I have not played even close like this, but you know, I’m happy that I had that moments in my life and I managed to achieve what I have achieved when I was young, but I definitely don’t want to be young again. I’m very happy with my age right now. I’m happy to get older, you know, and yeah, obviously happy with the win,” said Marta Kostyuk.
This interview turned heads of fans, as Kostyuk has always actively campaigned against Russian and Belaruisan players, refusing handshakes with opponents as a direct protest against the ongoing war. Highlighting her commending Andreeva’s career, fans questioned her on X, writing:
“So how is this not the “Russian propaganda” she claims that she needs to avoid?”
Another user on X questioning her stance commented:
“So she can say nice things about Mirra off-court but can’t congratulate or even acknowledge her on-court?”
One of the followers called Kostyuk ‘retarded,’ commenting:
“Perfect example of how retarded Marta Kostyuk is: 1) Claims she doesn’t shake hands or congratulate Russians publicly because of concerns about “Russian propaganda. 2) Says this in an interview tho.@marta_kostyuk = a woman with nothing going on upstairs.”
Marta Kostyuk made her feelings known about the Madrid Open victory
After securing an exceptional win at the Madrid Open, Marta Kostyuk spoke to the media, where she weighed in on her victory, stating that her consistency helped her in achieving the success. Praising her own performance, she revealed that despite injuries, she kept on working on herself.
“For sure. I’m playing good. I mean undefeated on clay this year, which is unbelievable. It takes a lot of work and I was pretty consistent the whole last year. I had some injuries, but I was consistent with the work and for me, it mattered and matters the most,” said Marta Kostyuk.
She added:
“I’m a Masters champion right now, but I want to keep doing the same thing and keep working and keep enjoying this journey. It’s about the journey, it’s not about the destination.”
