Emma Raducanu’s return to Romania this week is about far more than just another stop on the tennis calendar. Competing at the Transylvania Open, the British star opened up about her deep emotional connection to her father’s homeland and the childhood memories that make the trip especially meaningful.
Raducanu is currently in Romania to compete at the Transylvania Open, a visit that holds personal significance beyond tennis. She squared off against Greet Minnen in the first round and produced a dominant performance, claiming an impressive 6-0, 6-4 victory. She is now scheduled to face Kaja Juvan in the second round on February 4 on Centre Court.
Born to a Romanian father and Chinese mother, Raducanu has always spoken proudly of her multicultural roots. But coming back to Romania for the tournament has brought a wave of nostalgia and comfort for the 2021 US Open champion. Reflecting on her return, the Brit admitted that being in Romania still feels like a second home.
“I feel comfortable because I understand everything that is happening around me. I have been coming here since I was a child. I would come back every summer and spend time with my grandmother. When I was younger, I would spend a lot more time here in the summer. I would come for two or three weeks at a time. But since I became a professional player, I think it has become much harder to find the time to come back, especially during the season, when you spend very little time at home anyway,” said Emma Raducanu.
Her comment highlights the sacrifices that come with life on the WTA tour. Between constant travel and tournaments around the world, opportunities to reconnect with family have been limited. That is why this week’s tournament in Cluj-Napoca holds extra significance for Raducanu.
