The 2026 Australian Open’s men’s singles main draw has unsurprisingly got tennis fans talking. From home favorite Alex de Minaur’s tough first-round clash against Matteo Berrettini to two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner potentially meeting Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals and Novak Djokovic’s uphill battle to challenge for his 25th Major, fans have delivered a myriad of reactions on a variety of possible storylines that are likely to be pivotal to how the men’s singles tournament shapes up this year in Melbourne.
The draw looks particularly tough for World No. 3 Alexander Zverev, who finished the 2025 Australian Open as the runner-up. Zverev’s quarter features fellow seeds Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Arthur Rinderknech and Learner Tien; three players who all got the better of the German last year. In light of this, several fans opined that the three-time Major finalist won’t get very far at the 2026 Australian Open.
“Zverev is COOKED lol. Medvedev, FAA, even Rinderknech are all in his half and were collectively 6-1 against him last year.”
“Zverev’s quarter is so stacked, he might need a miracle to get to the QF atleast.”
Another fan, optimistic about the chances of the resurgent Medvedev, chimed in:
“If Medvedev is serious about making a top 8 bounceback he needs to make a run here. Probably the best draw he could have realistically asked for as a #11 seed.”
One empathized with Shelton, who is likely to lock horns with Sinner in the last eight. The same fan also called record 10-time Australian Open champion Djokovic’s quarter difficult, writing:
“Poor Ben can’t escape Jannik. Novaks quarter is kinda rough. There are a lot of good first round matches this year.”
Yet another highlighted the tricky draw that the legendary Serb has to navigate that may very well require him to beat the likes of Hubert Hurkacz and Taylor Fritz to reach the semis. The fan added:
“Brutal draw for Novak”
Another fan wondered why tennis is so cruel sometimes due to de Minaur and Berrettini being drawn to face each other in the very first round itself. The fan wrote:
“De Minaur vs Berrettini is such a cruel first round. Tennis gods hate them and all of us too.”
Reigning World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who is yet to win the Australian Open, was discussed too, with one fan looking forward to a potential clash between the Spaniard and Alexander Bublik, with the Kazakh having recently entered the ATP top 10 with his title-winning run in Hong Kong. The fan weighed in with:
“Carlos’s draw looks very good imo. Stoked to see some fresh potential match ups. Would love Bublik vs Carlos to happen.”
Jannik Sinner Looking To Achieve At Australian Open 2026 What Novak Djokovic Has Achieved Twice Before
So far in the Open Era, Djokovic is the only player to have won three consecutive Australian Open men’s singles titles, and an even more remarkable fact is that the Serb has done it twice. The first time Djokovic did it was from 2011 to 2013, and the second time, from 2019 to 2021.
This time around, Sinner, having defeated Medvedev and Zverev in the 2024 and 2025 finals respectively, has the opportunity to complete a ‘threepeat’ of the Australian Open men’s singles title. The Italian, arguably the most feared player right now on hard courts, ended the 2025 season with a title triumph at the ATP Finals, and should be confident about his chances of going all the way in Melbourne again.
