Coco Gauff Breaks Silence on Miu Miu Hair Controversy

Coco Gauff’s photoshoot with Miu Miu became another reason for fans to call out the tennis star. Gauff wore a red polo shirt, a skirt and had a leather bag. However, what caught fans’ attention was her undone hair look.

In the photos, she wore her natural hair in a bun. While many fans praised the look, a wave of criticism emerged online. Many shared that her hair looked undone or unpolished and that it was not professional for a luxury fashion campaign. Some other fans went offensively with their remarks, comparing to civil rights imagery.

In the wake of this backlash, Gauff posted an 8-minute-long video on TikTok to call out those mocking her look, especially her hair. The two-time Grand Slam champion first revealed the details of the photoshoot.

Gauff shared that it was only her social person and herself involved directly in the photoshoot in her parents’ backyard. Fashion brand Miu Miu asked her to select from their outfits and she picked one that she used for a photoshoot. So for those mocking the outfit, Gauff responded:

“For people who didn’t like, quote unquote, like the outfit, first of all, it’s Miu Miu. That’s their aesthetic. I love the Miu Miu aesthetic. So if you don’t like it, the girls who get it, get it. The girls who don’t, don’t. I picked the outfit out. They gave me different outfits to choose from. That’s the one that I picked.”

Further, Gauff explained the reason behind her natural hair in a bun.

“I personally don’t like to slick back my hair super sleek because it does damage my hair,” Gauff said. “I do play tennis. So most of the times where I’m wearing it in a bun, I choose to allow my hair to be present in this 4C self because I do have 4C hair and I don’t want it to be super slick back because it’s just not good for my hair.”

Gauff added that her friends and family complemented her look when they went for dinner later that evening. She also said she wanted to promote natural hair.

“So I’m not going to apologize for the way that my hair looks because there are other girls who have the exact same hair as me,” Gauff said. “And I just wanted them to feel represented that your hair is literally fine the way it is. My hair was good enough for a high fashion, fashionable brand like Miu Miu to promote one of their newest launches. So if my hair, 4C hair, is good enough for that, then yours is good enough to do whatever you need it to do.”

No makeup was another concern among fans, but Gauff said she didn’t want to wear makeup that day.

Coco Gauff’s Advice for Black Girls With Kinky Hair

Through the video, Coco Gauff also shared some advice for black girls with kinky hair. She asks the girls to do anything they want to with their hair without thinking too much of what other people would think.

“Black girls out there who have kinky hair like me: do what you want to do with your hair,” Gauff said. “Because at the end of the day, people who hate on your appearance and the way that you look have something deeply insecure about themselves. The only reason people comment on people’s looks, especially when they present themselves naturally, is because they’re insecure.”

Gauff asks people not to be judgmental about those who wear “wigs, weaves, or full face makeup” as well, revealing she herself does that sometimes.

Gauff also mentions that she really struggled with the hurtful reactions to her Miu Miu look. She even posted that she regretted returning to social media only to see people again mocking her for all the wrong reasons.
