Patrick McEnroe recently pointed out a concern about the state of American men’s tennis development with 90% foreign players amid the ongoing NCAA tennis championships. Echoing his thoughts, Clay Travis urged for a debate on this issue.

The 2026 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships commenced on May 14 and will conclude on May 17 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia. Recently TCU, Texas, Wake Forest, and Virginia advanced to the Final Four after delivering stellar performances on May 14.

Shortly after this, the former American tennis player shared a tweet, emphasizing how the American colleges are heavily filled with international players, especially in top tennis programs. Discussing whether the US college system is effectively developing American tennis talent anymore or not, he wrote:

“Congrats to TCU, Texas, Wake Forest and Virginia on reaching the NCAA men’s tennis Final Four. By my count: 24 singles starters. 3 from the USA. It’s not about one school or one match. It’s about the overall numbers — and what they mean for the American college tennis pathway,” wrote Patrick McEnroe.

Joining him in this concern, the Outkick founder, Travis, demanded an America-First strategy amid 90% foreign players in NCAA tennis.

“Should US colleges have a minimum number of US born athletes on their teams receiving scholarships? Legit debate we should have. Look at men’s tennis numbers below, nearly 90% foreign born,” Travis wrote on X.

    He also added:

“’Im hearing from more and more people on this issue. It’s across all Olympic college sports. Foreign countries don’t let American stars dominate their pro leagues — they all have limits on American players — why do we not do same for our scholarships?”

Patrick McEnroe suggested American colleges cap the number of international tennis players

After the University of Arkansas dropped men’s and women’s tennis, Patrick McEnroe urged the American colleges and universities to reduce the number of international players on their lineups. Weighing in on the situation on his ‘Holding Court with Patrick McEnroe’ show, he said:

“Division 1 tennis is now the most international major sport in college athletics, roughly 64% international on the men’s side, 61% on the women’s side. So yeah, I think it’s time, everyone, time for the NCAA, time for conferences, time for lawmakers, if necessary, there has to be a cap on the number of international players in American college tennis. A cap, a real rule that says American universities have a responsibility to also develop American players, because if we don’t do it, who’s going to do it?” said Patrick McEnroe.

The Arkansas University took the decision of dropping tennis after this season because of financial limitations, and this step will reportedly save $2.5 million.
