Ben Shelton’s girlfriend, Trinity Rodman, was in attendance on center court for his Nexo Dallas Open final against Taylor Fritz on Sunday night. It was a mouthwatering contest between the tournament’s top two seeds, as Shelton saved three championship points on his serve in the deciding set to clinch his first ATP 500 title of the season.
After completing his thrilling comeback win against Fritz, Shelton approached the players’ box, where Rodman was applauding his win alongside friends and family. The Washington Spirit star’s hilarious reaction was on full display when a sweaty Shelton hugged her. She groaned in angst, leaving fans and commentators laughing at the funny moment.
Rodman was also present for Shelton’s semifinal match against Denis Shapovalov on Saturday, after which the duo celebrated a romantic Valentine’s Day. This was a much-needed win for the World No. 9, who had a disappointing run in the Australian swing. With the Dallas Open title, Shelton will firmly remain in the top-10, increasing his chances of rising further.
Ben Shelton Understood he Needed Something Supernatural to Win the Dallas Open Title
In his postgame interview, Shelton showered praise on Fritz for an incredible final while at the same time admitting he needed something otherworldly to win the tournament. “Fritz was playing very good tennis, and I was struggling a lot with what he was throwing at me, but I tried to be a competitor through and through,” Shelton said.
“Once I get a set, I feel pretty confident and feel like I have some sort of rhythm, I just start to loosen up and find my level. I thank God, because I needed something supernatural to end up winning this tournament with all the holes that I was in. This is one of my favorite atmospheres I’ve ever played in,” he added.
Shelton had already announced skipping the Qatar Open, which starts on Monday, and instead staying in North America, but traveling further south to Mexico to play at the Mexican Open (ATP 500) in Acapulco beginning on February 23.
