Arthur Fils Haiti Connection & Parents’ Support Behind France’s Rising Tennis Star

Arthur Fils is a rising French tennis star, with three ATP titles to his name and having peaked with a No. 14 career high ATP rankings. Fils started tennis at a very early age on a makeshift court in the Paris suburb of San Michele.

A lot of Fils’ success is attributed to his parents, who raised him in Bondoufle, a small commune just 15 miles outside Paris. Fils’ first sparked interest in tennis when he was on vacation, playing tennis with his uncle. Despite hurting his knee, he wanted to continue playing.

    Arthur Fils’ Haiti Connection

Arthur Fils was born to Anne and Jean-Philippe on June 12, 2004, in the Paris suburbs. He also has a brother, whose name is not known.

Though Fils represents France on international stages, he has a Haitian background. Jean-Philippe is from Haiti. Fils’ old man is considered to be a central figure in his son’s rise in tennis. He started coaching him at the age of five until he was about 12. Jean-Philippe, who played basketball as a teenager, trained with Fils at the Saint-Michel-sur-Orge tennis club. Fils describes it as “the worst court I ever played on my whole life, but I think it’s the best memories that I can have, with my dad.

“We played every weekend. We were playing probably six hours or seven hours per weekend, having lunch on the court,” Fils added. “And the court, it’s not even a court — it’s completely destroyed. And I remember we bought the net and we put up the net, and the court didn’t have any lines anymore. It was always bad bounces. I’m not going to say that I enjoyed the moment, [but] to remember it, I think it helps me so much.”

Role of Arthur Fils’ Parents Behind His Tennis Career

Both of Arthur Fils’ parents played a big role in helping the Frenchman grow in the sport. His father introduced him to the sport, and his mother provided emotional stability.

In an interview from 2024, Anne shared how she reinforced values like discipline, perseverance, and belief in Fils.

“He’s a very lovable child who’s very resilient, who’s always trying to do the best he can, and we all encourage him in that,” she told ATP Tour. “We actually try to tell our children that there are no limits. Nothing is possible, you just have to work hard and accept to work, to start again, to continue, to continue, to persevere.”

The one piece of advice from Jean-Philippe, Fils continue to keep in his mind is “never quit.” When asked about the advice he received from his father, he said:

“The same sentence, but it always made sense: ‘Never quit, give 100% and we’ll see, and you don’t come on the court to participate, you come on the court to win.’”

Fils’ manager, Philippe Weiss, shared that his career was a “family project” based on the “values of the family.”

Weiss also says that Fils doesn’t hide any emotions even during the match, making him an attractive option for brands. Fils idolized fellow French tennis star Gael Monfils growing up, who again is considered to be a great entertainer on the court.
