With the World Cup fever underway, Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, is the latest fan to weigh in on a recent knockout game. The match in question is the round of 16 between France and Paraguay, which France won by a single goal, scored by their star Kylian Mbappé in the 70th minute.
While France advanced to the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive time, many fans and analysts questioned the referee’s decisions during the match. Some fans felt the decisions were biased toward France, noting that France’s players received three bookings while Paraguay committed multiple intentional fouls without similar repercussions.
Ohanian, one of those fans, shared his candid take on social media.
“Merci, France! We love your gift. Also you’re getting robbed right now by the refs. Glad @KMbappe took care of that pen. Refs never had control of this match,” Ohanian wrote on X.
Take a look at one of the controversial moments from the game here: Mbappé was clearly fouled and intentionally hit by a Paraguay player, and the referee, with a great vantage point, seemed to overlook the diabolical play.
Alexis Ohanian and His Daughter Olympia Made Their Loyalty Clear Ahead of the R16 Match
Ahead of the France-Paraguay encounter, Ohanian took to his Instagram account to share heartfelt images of his older daughter, Olympia, showcasing the father-daughter’s allegiance to the French squad.
Justifying his loyalty towards France ahead of the knockout clash, Ohanian captioned the images as, “Smh since Germany is out… and the USA isn’t playing atm. Because she [Olympia] speaks French, so here we are… I had a French-Armenian grandmother, so I guess it counts?”

Ohanian and his daughters, Olympia and Adira, traveled to London to watch Williams’ surprising return to professional tennis. However, her comeback was brief, as she was defeated in the first round of Wimbledon by Maya Joint on Wednesday. Later, Serena pulled out of her doubles match due to a back injury.
