Robert Griffin III Sticks Up for Shedeur Sanders and Deion Sanders Relationship

Every athlete who is the child of a former great will always be criticized because of their parents. Sanders is no different.

The former Heisman winner took to X to express his opinion on the criticism of their relationship.

“What Deion Sanders accomplished together with his sons should be APPLAUDED, not picked apart and used against them,” Griffin said.

Coach Prime took over Jackson State in 2020, having Sanders as his quarterback in the final two seasons before they both headed to the Colorado Buffaloes in an attempt to grow their skill sets and turn the program into a winning one. That has led to questions over Sanders’s ability, which he has constantly had to prove to many doubters.

Ahead of the NFL scouting combine, Sanders was very confident, saying, “If you’re not trying to change the franchise and culture…don’t get me! You know history repeats itself over and over and over, and I’ve done it over and over and over, so there is no question why an NFL franchise should pick me.”

Those questions have forever been answered by answers from both Sanders and Coach Prime. Whether behind a microphone or on the field, they have both shown an ability to win football games.

“Deion didn’t do it with kid gloves on either. When Sheduer needed to play better, he voiced it for the team to see and hear,” Griffin continued. This is something that is very noticeable in the Coach Prime series that has followed Sanders during his time at Jackson State and Colorado.

Sanders is one of the top-ranked quarterbacks heading into the NFL Draft off the back of a stellar 2024 campaign. He led the FBS in multiple passing categories, throwing for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. His leadership was crucial to the Buffaloes going 9-4, their first winning season since 2016.

“Isn’t what Deion Sanders did for his kids exactly what a father is supposed to? So why are people hating on it? They shouldn’t. We should celebrate it,” Griffin said.

Shedeur Sanders Talent Doesn’t Go Unnoticed by NFL Front Offices

Regardless of the noise from media personnel and social media, NFL analysts and front offices see Sanders’ talent, which is why he is so highly thought of and a consensus first-round talent.

There has been a mixed bag of landing spots for Sanders in mock drafts, with some having him go first overall and others seeing him drop later in the first round. CFN’s own 7-round NFL Mock Draft has him falling to No. 21 and being a steal of a pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It would be a good decision for all parties, as Mike Tomlin is looking for a franchise quarterback who is certain to succeed. Sanders would join a hard-working franchise with a winning culture that just needs some fine-tuning to become a real Super Bowl contender.

Many teams are still looking for their QB1, so it would be no surprise if he were taken in the first 10 picks by the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, or the New York Jets, all of which have big questions behind center.

Cam Ward is seen as the top quarterback in the draft so far, with Sanders just behind him. Depending on where Ward goes, that certainly will factor into a team’s decision. If he goes first overall, then we may see Sanders land with the Giants at third overall. If Ward goes later, then it may push Sanders back.

I find it difficult to see him falling out of the top 10 because at least four teams have questions about their quarterback position. It isn’t a powerful quarterback class, but the sooner a team has their franchise guy, the better for them to build around.

The criticism has never phased the Sanders family, and they continue to find the answers. NFL executives and former players clearly believe in the two’s talent and support their continued success.
