DJ Lagway shocked college football fans when he entered the transfer portal. A player of his talent is often expected to become the centerpiece for any program. However, Lagway didn’t see himself with the Gators in the long run.
Less than a month after announcing his transfer portal decision, Lagway committed to the Baylor Bears on January 8. Ideally, that should’ve been the end of his search, but that’s not how things are going right now.
As per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, despite committing to Baylor earlier this month, Lagway is still in talks with other programs. He had a fruitful visit to Baylor earlier this week, but it seems like the quarterback isn’t satisfied with his decision.
The program that is still trying to bring him in is Ole Miss. While he’s free to keep searching until the portal closes, fans aren’t liking his approach, especially after he has already committed.
“His commitment got intercepted,” a Gators fan page wrote.
“His dad is gonna be pissed,” a fan wrote.
“Clear sign he can’t kick the feeling that he’s too good for Baylor,” a fan wrote.
“The issue is he is a huge costly gamble that may not be prepared for the ego check. 1. He may be hurt, so tough to sign him for 2027. 2. If he’s not hurt, then I’m not sure why any P4 would want him,” a fan wrote.
“ole miss about to swoop in and make this transfer portal chaos even wilder, lagway looking for that perfect fit,” a fan wrote.
“What was all that “committed” talk then 💀 everyone kept bringing up his dad, RG3 posted the pic… If this has long been known why hasn’t that been the story?” a fan wrote.
Thamel, in a follow-up post, stated that Lagway “has long intended to take a full repertory of visits before making his decision.” So, Ole Miss isn’t going to be the end of this story, as Lagway might visit and have discussions with other programs as well.
DJ Lagway’s Big Red Flag
There’s no denying that Lagway is one of the best quarterbacks in the game today. The interest he’s generating from programs backs that claim. At the same time, his game isn’t flawless, and he has a major ‘red flag.’
On an episode of Always College Football, Greg McElroy praised Lagway’s talent. While the talent aspect isn’t up for debate, McElroy believes Lagway also brings a “decent dose of volatility.”
A 63% pass completion rate, 16 touchdowns with 14 interceptions, points to the biggest problem in Lagway’s game.
“The big red flag was the decision making under pressure, the interceptions, and now over the course of his career, two season, he’s got 23 picks in two years,” McElroy said.
As high as his ceiling is, Lagway has one major flaw in his game.
