Yonger Bastida’s strength coach Durbin has taken a dig at AJ Ferrari for accusing the Iowa wrestler of HGH consumption after a loss at the NCAA Wrestling Championships. The coach has also demanded an apology for his statement in the next 72 hours.
Bastida and Ferrari locked horns with each other on the second day of the championships in the heavyweight (285 lbs) semifinals. It was a terrific showdown, where Bastida secured the win with an early takedown and a seven-point move in the first period. He registered a 15-7 major decision win over the Nebraska wrestler to advance to the finals.
This loss didn’t sit right with Ferrari, as shortly after the upset in the press conference, he highlighted the Iowa wrestler’s visible acne, back breakouts, and upgrade in the weight class, indirectly hinting at possible performance-enhancing drugs. He also mentioned the test for HGH, emphasizing his gain of 30 pounds of muscle.
“So whoever is running the testing protocol for test HGH probably should go test people, not just in the season but outside this season, because he gained 30 pounds of muscle,” said Ferrari.
Days after these accusations, Bastida’s strength coach posted a video on X, slamming Ferrari for his accusations and demanding an apology. Taking a dig at his form and the way he trains and defending the Iowa wrestler, he said:
“AJ, you’re barking up the wrong tree on this one. My name is Coach Durbin, AKA Turbo Durbo. And I was the strength coach in charge of Yonger Bastida’s transition from 197 to heavyweight. Now, I’ve been watching your training. You don’t have a standard son. You shortcut everything, you add load, but then you shorten the range of motion. That is not an indication of strength gain. That is only you shortening the distance in which you are moving the weight,” said Durbin.
He added:
“So what happened? What happened because you spent too much time hooting and hollering around the cameras. Yonger was training, and he was training, and he was consistent, and day in and day out, he was waiting for his opportunity to fully train your ass.”
The tweet’s caption further read:
“I can assure you Yonger’s transition from 197 to heavy in one year’s time was in pure form. I expect an apology within 72 hrs; otherwise, there will be more coming your way. @mrfasttwitch.”
Yonger Bastida opened up about his victory over AJ Ferrari at the NCAA Wrestling semifinals
After dashing AJ Ferrari’s hopes of advancing to the NCAA Finals by besting him in the heavyweight finals, Yonger Bastida sat for a post-meet press conference, where he was asked about his bout against the Nebraska wrestler. Responding to this, the Iowa athlete said that he was eagerly waiting for a rematch with him after losing to him at 197 lbs in 2021. Revealing how he was excited he was for the matchup, he said:
“I mean, you know, like I’ve been waiting for this matchup too, you know, this rematch for a long time. I wrestled a Ferrari back in 2021. He beat me at 197. So, you know, I was excited about this match. You know, like four years since we wrestled, no. So, I was excited. I don’t know about him, but I was excited for that matchup,” said Yonger Bastida.
