“My Career’s Over, It Sucks”: Nebraska All-American Silas Allred Opens Up on Career-Ending NCAA Quarterfinal Injury

The All-American Nebraska Cornhusker wrestler, Silas Allred, had just suffered a devastating ankle injury in the quarterfinals of the NCAA D1 Championships, which has now abruptly put an end to his mat career. Allred met the news with extreme disappointment and reflected on the impact this scar has left behind.

Silas Allred had qualified for the D1 championships and, as the No. 8 seed at 184 pounds, faced Penn State’s Rocco Welsh in the quarterfinals. During the third round of the bout, as the Nittany Lions led 7-1, Welsh took him down, resulting in Allred’s ankle being crushed.

Allred spoke about the diagnosis that confirmed the severity of his ankle injury. Standing on crutches, he gave an interview, discussing the injury and shedding light on what this means for him.

“My tournament’s over, my career’s over, it sucks.. i’m hurt, i’m sad, but i’ll be alright,” he said.

He also highlighted his faith in the almighty and spoke about emerging strong after this setback.

“I love this, and I wanna go out there and win, but we’ve gotta come to terms with the fact that my plan isn’t God’s plan, and his plan’s greater than mine, and I have faith in it,” he said.

The wrestling community has considered this an absolute heartbreak, and tributes to his career have already started to pour in.

Silas Allred Celebrated as a True Husker

While Silas Allred’s injury has proven fatal for his mat career, his career is being celebrated by the sports community from all over. The Nebraska Athletics Committee honored the Native on their social media page, with words of tribute and a photo gallery highlighting his career.

Allred himself reflected during an interview on what being a Husker truly meant to him.

“This isn’t a team, this is a family that your bought into, the culture, the coaches, teammates, it’s family, and I’ve been blessed to be part of it for these past six years,” he said.

Fans too reacted to his departure and left encouraging words, alongside thank-you notes on how proud each and every Nebraskan was of what Allred has contributed to the community.

Since his 2020 graduation, Allred has enjoyed major success in collegiate wrestling. In 2023, Allred secured the Big Ten title at 197 pounds as a freshman, beating the then-reigning champion Max Dean. In 2025, he became the All-American Hero at 184 lbs with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

During his final season as a senior, Allred had also become a mentor to many of the up-and-coming high school wrestlers in the Cornhuskers wrestling roster.
